At the close of the Second World War, Karin (Ingrid Bergman), a Lithuanian refugee, marries Antonio (Mario Vitale), an Italian ex-POW fisherman, as means of escaping an internment camp. After all the vows are dealt with they take off to Antonio’s home island of Stromboli; also home to an active volcano. Once ashore, Karin quickly discovers island life isn’t for her; the landscape is harsh and barren, the people deeply conservative, traditional and quick to judge, and her husband cold, mean and possessive. Will she find an escape, settle in or succumb to the volcano?
