Kubrick's elliptical Vietnam War-era nightmare Full Metal Jacket is a journey through the darkness of war and the dehumanisation of the military machine. A group of USMC recruits arrive for basic training at Parris Island and find themselves in hell, ruled over by the brutal but linguistically talented drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (an iconic performance from Lee Ermey). His wrath is especially fierce towards the hapless Private Leonard Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio in his breakout role) whose continued mistakes bring down collective punishment on the recruits, leading to a boiling point of anger before the new Marines are shipped off to the chaos of Vietnam.
