As their daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert) lives abroad, music teachers Anne and Georges Laurent (Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva) live out their retirement in their cosy Paris apartment. One morning Anne has a stroke and her health takes a sharp decline. While George does all he can to take care of her, the two find themselves at the crossroads of difficult decisions.
