Trailer & Synopsis
At her grandfather’s house in Mexico, the innocent eyes of seven-year-old Sol (Naíma Sentíes) observe various relatives preparing for a surprise birthday party for her father. Yet, beneath the vibrant chaos of this seemingly joyous occasion, a subtle tension simmers. As the day unfolds, Sol navigates her family’s increasingly fractured dynamics, gradually coming to understand the weight and importance of this particular celebration – and how her world is about to change forever.
As written and directed by Lila Avilés, Tótem beautifully explores themes of family bonds, the delicate balance of life, and the acceptance of letting go, all through the disarming perspective of a child. A soulful, life-affirming experience which was rightfully selected as Mexico’s submission for the Best International Film Oscar in 2024.
