Donya (a former translator for the US army), is an Afghan immigrant/refugee settling into life in the US after fleeing her home city of Kabul on an emergency evacuation flight when the Taliban took over in 2021 and is suffering from survivor guilt. The role of Donya is actually played by a real-life Afghan refugee, with a pitch-perfect performance to match the director’s dry wit. Donya takes a job in a fortune cookie factory to avoid the Afghan community living in her (Fremont) block and encounters an interesting array of characters while working there.
