Trailer & Synopsis
Twenty-seven years in the making, Gakuryū Ishii, one of the great punk filmmakers of Japanese cinema, gives us his gonzo take on The Box Man: a surreal mind-melter from legendary novelist Kōbō Abe, author of Woman in the Dunes. After a Tokyo photographer (Masatoshi Nagase) finds the journal of a box man – a voluntary vagrant who lives in a cardboard box – he too is compelled to take up this way of life and view the world clearly from the anonymous safety of a peephole. But being a box man and losing your identity isn’t easy; those who don’t ignore you want to kill you, or worse, be you. We’re honoured to be hosting the Australian premiere of The Box Man.
