In the 1950s, young couple Muriel (Edgar-Jones) and Lee (Poulter) make the move from Kansas to California to settle down after the Korean War. When Lee’s charismatic and mysterious brother Julius (Elordi) arrives unannounced, Lee wishes to build a life for all three of them. Looking for something more, Julius quickly departs, but the impression he leaves on Muriel is indelible, who now finds herself longing for more than the confines of her conventional life. When he starts working at a casino, Julius begins to become entwined with Henry (Calva), another employee, while Muriel embarks on her secret life. Spending her days gambling on racehorses, she eventually meets Sandra (Calle), her neighbour, and discovers a love she never thought possible.
