Spider-Man and The Odyssey Refuse to Budge as Insidious Makes a Strong Australian Debut

Australia’s box office saw little movement at the very top over the weekend of August 20–23, 2026, as Spider-Man and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued their impressive runs. While the two major releases held their ground, the newest chapter in the Insidious franchise made a strong entrance, proving that there was still plenty of room for horror amid the blockbuster heavyweights.

According to FilmInk’s latest box office report, Spider-Man remained firmly in control, with the web-slinger once again proving difficult to dislodge. The Odyssey also maintained its position near the top, receiving an additional boost from increased IMAX sessions and continuing to draw audiences looking for a large-scale cinematic experience.

The weekend’s strongest newcomer was the latest Insidious film, which opened in third place. Its debut was particularly notable as it outperformed Mutiny and Spa Weekend, despite both of those titles opening across a greater number of screens. The result suggests that the enduring popularity of the Insidious franchise remains a major draw for Australian horror audiences.

Another new release to make a positive impression was Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Soccer, which delivered a strong opening-week performance. The film stood out among the weekend’s fresh arrivals and added another bright spot to an otherwise competitive marketplace dominated by established blockbusters.

The results were more mixed for other newcomers. A24’s Tony posted what FilmInk described as a middling result, while Kristen Stewart’s directorial effort, The Chronology of Water, faced a much tougher start. The film reportedly earned around $5,000 across six screens, making it one of the weekend’s more disappointing theatrical performances.
