Gods, Kings and a Battle for Destiny: Ramayana: Rise of a Legend Set to Take Australian Cinemas by Storm

By FandyOctober 31, 2026

One of India’s most celebrated ancient epics is heading to the big screen in a spectacular new adaptation. Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is scheduled to arrive in Australian cinemas on 5 November 2026, bringing a legendary tale of love, duty, sacrifice and the battle between good and evil to audiences in a Hindi-language version with English subtitles.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film draws inspiration from the Ramayana, the ancient epic that has shaped Indian storytelling, culture and spiritual traditions for generations. At its centre is Rama, a prince whose commitment to righteousness is tested when circumstances force him to leave behind his royal life and face a destiny far greater than his own ambitions.

Ranbir Kapoor takes on the role of Rama, while Sai Pallavi portrays Sita, the princess whose relationship with Rama forms a central part of the story. Yash appears as Ravana, the powerful king whose pride and thirst for vengeance set the stage for a conflict with consequences extending far beyond the lives of those directly involved. Ravi Dubey also features in the cast.

The story follows Rama as his journey takes him away from the comforts of the royal court and into a world of uncertainty, hardship and danger. His exile becomes a defining test of character, placing loyalty, honour and personal sacrifice above the privileges of royal life. As the paths of Rama and Ravana move towards confrontation, the film explores the choices that separate a noble ruler from an antagonist driven by power and revenge.

For audiences familiar with the epic, the adaptation offers an opportunity to revisit a timeless story through contemporary filmmaking. For newcomers, it provides an introduction to characters and themes that have resonated across generations. The narrative’s emphasis on family, courage, responsibility and the consequences of personal ambition gives the film an appeal that reaches beyond its mythological setting.

Tiwari, who previously directed the acclaimed sports drama Dangal and the action thriller Bawaal, takes the helm of this ambitious production. The scale of the source material presents a substantial creative challenge, requiring the filmmakers to bring a world of princes, kingdoms and larger-than-life conflicts to the screen while preserving the emotional foundations of the story.

The film is also arriving in multiple language versions in Australia, including Hindi with English subtitles, alongside dubbed editions for audiences who prefer other Indian languages. This broad release strategy reflects the enduring popularity of Indian cinema among Australia's culturally diverse moviegoing audience.

With a runtime listed at approximately 205 minutes for the Hindi version, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend promises an extended cinematic journey rather than a brief retelling. Its combination of epic adventure, family drama and mythological conflict could make it one of the notable Indian releases on the Australian cinema calendar this November.

Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is scheduled to open in Australian cinemas on Thursday, 5 November 2026. Moviegoers can check listings at Event Cinemas, HOYTS and other participating cinemas for session times and tickets.
