May the Odds Be Ever in His Favour: The Hunger Games Returns with Sunrise on the Reaping

By FandyNovember 05, 2026

The world of Panem is returning to Australian cinemas, but this time the story turns back the clock to one of the darkest chapters in its history. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to open across Australia on 19 November 2026, taking audiences 24 years before the events of the original The Hunger Games and into the brutal 50th Hunger Games.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, who returns to the franchise after helming several previous instalments, the new film adapts Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel Sunrise on the Reaping. The story follows a young Haymitch Abernathy on the morning of the reaping for the Second Quarter Quell, a special edition of the Games in which each district is forced to send twice the usual number of tributes.

For Haymitch, the event marks the beginning of a nightmare that will ultimately shape the man audiences later know from Katniss Everdeen's story. At just 16 years old, he is pulled away from his family and thrown into an arena containing 48 young tributes. With the Capitol controlling every aspect of the spectacle, survival becomes about more than physical strength. Haymitch must work out who he can trust while confronting a system designed to crush resistance.

Australian newcomer Joseph Zada takes on the role of young Haymitch, succeeding Woody Harrelson, who portrayed the character in the original films. Zada's casting gives the new prequel a particularly strong Australian connection, as the actor was born in Sydney.

He is joined by an impressive ensemble that includes Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow.

The cast also features Glenn Close, Maya Hawke, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Lili Taylor, Ben Wang, Billy Porter and Molly McCann. Several of the characters are younger versions of figures audiences will recognise from the earlier films, creating another connection between Haymitch's story and the events that eventually lead to Katniss' rebellion.

For Australian audiences, the film carries an added sense of occasion. Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to open in Australia one day before its US release, giving local moviegoers an early opportunity to return to Panem. The film is being distributed in Australia by Roadshow Films.

The new chapter also arrives with a significant creative reunion. James Newton Howard returns to provide the score, while Francis Lawrence once again directs, maintaining the visual and musical identity that has helped define the later Hunger Games films.

At the centre of the story, however, is a much younger version of a character fans already know. Haymitch's history has always been an important part of the franchise, but his time in the arena has largely remained a mystery. Sunrise on the Reaping finally puts that experience at the forefront, promising to reveal how the Games transformed him into the damaged but fiercely intelligent mentor seen years later.

The film has now received an official Australian M classification for mature themes and violence, according to the Australian Classification Board. The classification lists a runtime of 158 minutes, making it one of the more substantial releases on the Australian cinema calendar.

For longtime fans, Sunrise on the Reaping offers another chance to explore the history behind one of the franchise's most memorable characters. For newcomers, it provides a standalone entry point into Panem's past while expanding the mythology of the Hunger Games themselves.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday, 19 November 2026, with the film listed at 158 minutes and rated M for mature themes and violence.
