Love, Secrets and a Deadly Mystery: M. Night Shyamalan’s Remain Heads to Australian Cinemas

By FandyOctober 17, 2026

Australian moviegoers will have a new mystery to unravel next year with Remain, the upcoming romantic thriller from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, the film is scheduled to arrive in Australian cinemas on 11 February 2027, bringing together an intriguing blend of romance, suspense and the unexpected twists for which Shyamalan is known.

The story follows Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who relocates to a small coastal town to work on his latest project. Hoping to focus on his professional life, Tate instead finds himself drawn to a captivating young woman who challenges his isolation. Their encounter soon leads him into a dangerous mystery that threatens to turn his new beginning into something far more unsettling.

Gyllenhaal leads the cast as Tate, joined by Dynevor, best known for her role in Bridgerton. Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders also feature in the film. The combination of an established Hollywood lead and a rising television star gives Remain an appealing central pairing, while its coastal setting provides the backdrop for a story that gradually moves from personal connection towards darker territory.

The project also brings together two familiar names from different creative worlds. Shyamalan directs from his own screenplay, based on a story developed with bestselling novelist Nicholas Sparks. Sparks, whose work includes The Notebook, is known for emotionally driven romance, while Shyamalan has built a career around suspenseful storytelling and carefully guarded revelations. Their collaboration raises an interesting question: how will the film balance a relationship at its centre with the threat of a potentially deadly mystery?

Behind the scenes, Shyamalan produces alongside Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park, with Sparks serving as executive producer. Composer James Newton Howard, a longtime collaborator of Shyamalan, also returns to contribute to the film’s music.

With its mix of romance, mystery and thriller elements, Remain could appeal to audiences looking for more than a conventional love story. The film’s premise suggests that Tate’s new relationship will be inseparable from the secrets surrounding his new home, although the full nature of that danger remains under wraps.

Remain is currently listed for release in Australian cinemas on 11 February 2027. Its classification is yet to be confirmed, and cinema session times are expected to become available closer to release.
