Green Day, Teenage Dreams and One Very Bad Road Trip: Nimrods Is Coming to Australian Cinemas

Fans of Green Day and old-school coming-of-age comedies have something new to look forward to, with Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy heading to Australian cinemas this August.

Directed by Lee Kirk, the music-driven comedy follows three teenage friends whose biggest ambition is suddenly placed within reach after Tommy receives a phone call claiming that his band has been chosen to open for Green Day on New Year's Eve. There is just one problem: the invitation is actually an elaborate prank.

Determined to believe that his band's big break has finally arrived, Tommy steals his older brother's car and sets off with his bandmates on a frantic journey from Kansas City to Los Angeles. They have just three days to make it there, leading to a chaotic road trip filled with misadventures, unexpected encounters and plenty of trouble along the way.

While Green Day plays an important role in the story, Nimrods is not a traditional biopic. Instead, the film uses the band's early years as inspiration for a fictional story about friendship, youthful ambition and the reckless optimism of teenagers chasing an impossible dream. The story is set against the spirit of Green Day's early touring days, long before the band's breakthrough album Dookie changed their career.

Mason Thames leads the film as Tommy, alongside McKenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey and Fred Armisen. Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool also appear in the film, adding an extra layer of authenticity to a story built around the band's music and early punk-rock identity.
