Love, Loss and Longing: Sense and Sensibility Brings Jane Austen’s Timeless Romance Back to Australian Cinemas

Jane Austen’s world of forbidden feelings, social expectations and complicated romance is returning to the big screen. Sense and Sensibility, a new adaptation of the beloved Austen novel, is preparing to arrive in Australian cinemas this October, bringing Elinor and Marianne Dashwood’s celebrated story to a new generation.

Directed by Georgia Oakley, whose previous feature Blue Jean earned critical attention, the film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood and Esmé Creed-Miles as her younger sister Marianne. The cast also includes Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Fiona Shaw, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.

The story follows the Dashwood sisters after the death of their father leaves their family facing financial uncertainty. Forced to leave their Sussex estate with their widowed mother, Elinor and Marianne begin a new chapter of their lives in more modest surroundings. There, both sisters encounter love, heartbreak and the rigid social expectations of Georgian-era England.

At the centre of the story is the contrast between the sisters themselves. Elinor approaches life with restraint and practicality, carefully concealing her emotions, while Marianne wears her heart openly and follows passion wherever it leads. Their very different approaches to romance become increasingly complicated as they encounter a series of potential suitors.

The new film has been adapted for the screen by Diana Reid and produced by Focus Features and Working Title. Rather than simply revisiting Austen's classic as a period-piece romance, the filmmakers are presenting the story as a character-driven exploration of love, sisterhood and the tension between following your heart and protecting yourself from emotional pain.

Australian audiences will not have to wait much longer. MuviTimes currently lists Sense and Sensibility as an upcoming cinema release, describing it as a 131-minute PG-rated drama and romance, with the site initially listing September 10 as its cinema date.

However, updated Australian cinema listings now place the nationwide theatrical release on October 15, 2026. HOYTS, Palace Cinemas and Luna Palace Cinemas have all confirmed the October 15 release date, while Palace has already listed participating cinemas across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and other locations.

The Australian release is also expected to receive some extra star power. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles are scheduled to visit Sydney later in September for promotional appearances and the Australian premiere ahead of the film's nationwide release.

For Austen fans, the new Sense and Sensibility offers another opportunity to see one of literature's most enduring stories transformed for the modern cinema audience. And with Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles taking on the roles of two sisters whose ideas about love could hardly be more different, the film looks set to balance the elegance of its period setting with the emotional immediacy of a timeless family drama.

Sense and Sensibility opens in Australian cinemas nationwide on October 15, 2026.
