A bestselling psychological thriller is about to make its way from the page to the big screen. Verity, the highly anticipated adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, is set to arrive in Australian cinemas on October 1, 2026, bringing Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett together for a dark story of secrets, obsession and deception.

Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who receives an unexpected opportunity when she is hired to complete a hugely successful book series belonging to renowned author Verity Crawford.

There is, however, a disturbing reason why Verity can no longer finish the series herself.

After a mysterious accident leaves Verity unable to continue working, Lowen travels to the secluded Crawford family estate to begin the daunting task of taking over the unfinished books. What initially looks like the career opportunity she desperately needs soon becomes something far more unsettling.

While searching through Verity's belongings, Lowen discovers a manuscript containing what appear to be deeply personal autobiographical confessions. The pages reveal disturbing details about Verity's life, her marriage and the Crawford family, leaving Lowen increasingly uncertain about what she has stumbled upon.

Anne Hathaway takes on the role of Verity Crawford, with Dakota Johnson starring as Lowen Ashleigh and Josh Hartnett playing Verity's husband, Jeremy. The cast also includes Ismael Cruz Cordóva and Brady Wagner. Palace Cinemas lists the film at 116 minutes and currently gives it a CTC classification.

As Lowen becomes more involved with the Crawford household, the boundary between truth and fiction begins to disappear. Her growing attraction to Jeremy only makes matters more complicated, while the revelations in Verity's manuscript force her to question whether she has uncovered the truth or become part of a carefully constructed manipulation.

That uncertainty is at the heart of the film. Rather than presenting its mystery as a straightforward investigation, Verity plays with the idea that every revelation could change the meaning of what came before. The deeper Lowen goes, the harder it becomes to determine who can be trusted.

The film's Australian theatrical release is currently set for Thursday, October 1, 2026. Palace Cinemas lists screenings across participating locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and other Australian cities. MuviTimes is also listing Verity as a coming-soon title, with the same 116-minute runtime and Michael Showalter directing.

For fans of Hoover's novel, the biggest question will be how the film translates the book's deliberately unsettling atmosphere and its constant uncertainty between fact and fiction. For audiences coming to the story without prior knowledge of the novel, the combination of a remote estate, a mysterious manuscript and three major stars promises a thriller built around secrets rather than simple answers.

With Hathaway stepping into the role of the enigmatic author and Johnson's Lowen at the centre of the mystery, Verity is poised to bring a distinctly dark literary thriller to Australian cinemas this October.
