Resident Evil Is Back: Zach Cregger’s Terrifying Reboot Heads to Australian Cinemas

The nightmare is returning to the big screen. Resident Evil, the latest cinematic reinvention of Capcom’s legendary survival-horror franchise, is set to arrive in Australian cinemas this September, bringing a fresh and considerably darker take on the world of zombies, monsters and corporate nightmares.

Directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons, the new Resident Evil is not simply another retelling of the games or a continuation of the previous movie series. Instead, Cregger is taking the franchise in a new direction with an original story designed to capture the tension and desperation that have made the games such enduring horror favourites.

At the centre of the film is Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier whose seemingly ordinary night turns into a fight for survival when chaos suddenly erupts around him. What begins as a routine job quickly becomes a terrifying race through a world overwhelmed by violence, biological horror and the consequences of an outbreak.

The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser, with the film promising a mix of survival horror and action as Bryan attempts to stay alive while the situation spirals further out of control.

For longtime Resident Evil fans, one of the biggest attractions is Cregger himself. Following the unsettling success of Barbarian and the acclaimed horror thriller Weapons, the director has established a reputation for turning familiar genre ideas into something unpredictable. His involvement suggests that this new Resident Evil could lean much harder into atmosphere, tension and genuine horror.

The film has also been made with IMAX in mind, giving Australian audiences the opportunity to experience its action and horror on a much larger scale. IMAX Melbourne, for example, is already promoting the film as a coming attraction and confirms that it will be presented in IMAX 4K Laser Digital.

Australian cinema chains have the film scheduled for September 17, 2026. Event Cinemas and HOYTS list the same release date, while Palace Cinemas is also preparing screenings across participating locations around Australia. The film has been classified MA15+, with strong blood and gore, violence and coarse language.

With the release now only days away, Resident Evil is shaping up as one of September's major horror releases in Australia. Whether Cregger can deliver the kind of nerve-rattling survival experience fans have been waiting for remains to be seen, but the combination of a fresh story, a filmmaker with a strong horror pedigree and an IMAX presentation makes this one worth keeping on the radar.
