The Further Is Coming Home: Insidious: Out of the Further Set to Unleash a New Nightmare in Australian Cinemas

The Further is about to open its doors once again. Insidious: Out of the Further, the latest chapter in the long-running supernatural horror franchise, is heading to Australian cinemas this August, bringing a new family, a terrifying new ability and a fresh threat from the spirit world.

Directed by Jacob Chase, the filmmaker behind Come Play, the film stars Amelia Eve as Gemma, a young mother who returns to the house where she grew up to raise her daughter. What initially appears to be a return to familiar surroundings quickly turns into a nightmare when Gemma discovers that she has an unusual connection to The Further — the eerie realm inhabited by lost souls and malevolent entities.

But Gemma's ability comes with a horrifying twist. She can not only enter The Further; she can also bring the entities she encounters there back into the real world. As the demons discover what she is capable of, the boundary between the living world and the supernatural realm begins to collapse, turning Gemma's home — and potentially the entire world — into a playground for forces that were never meant to cross over.

The new film also marks the return of Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier, one of the most recognisable characters in the Insidious universe. Brandon Perea joins Eve and Shaye in the principal cast. The screenplay comes from Chase, with the story developed by Chase and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, while the characters are based on the creations of franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell.

The sixth instalment arrives after the Insidious franchise passed the $740 million mark at the worldwide box office, demonstrating the enduring popularity of its particular brand of supernatural horror. This time, however, the filmmakers appear ready to push the mythology further by exploring what happens when The Further is no longer confined to its own realm.

At around 106 minutes, Insidious: Out of the Further combines horror, mystery and thriller elements, with its Australian cinema release currently scheduled for 20 August 2026. Major Australian cinema chains, including HOYTS, Event Cinemas and Palace Cinemas, have listed the film for theatrical release.

The Australian release comes just ahead of the film's U.S. theatrical opening on August 21. Sony Pictures Releasing Australia's official trailer also confirms that the movie is arriving exclusively in cinemas this August, setting the stage for another large-screen scare for horror fans.

With a new protagonist, a returning franchise favourite and a disturbing new rule for The Further, Insidious: Out of the Further looks set to take the series into darker territory. For Australian horror audiences, the question is no longer whether the supernatural can cross into our world — but what happens when it refuses to leave.
