The Transformers: The Movie Returns to Australian Cinemas — A 40-Year-Old Classic Is Ready to Roll Out Again

Forty years after it first arrived on the big screen, The Transformers: The Movie is getting another chance to make some serious noise in Australian cinemas.

The beloved 1986 animated feature is returning for a special 40th-anniversary theatrical release from September 17, 2026, giving longtime Transformers fans the opportunity to experience the cult classic on the big screen once again. Screenings are scheduled across Australia, including major cinema chains such as Event Cinemas, Hoyts and Village Cinemas. 

Directed by Nelson Shin, The Transformers: The Movie was released in 1986 as an ambitious big-screen expansion of the popular animated television series. The film features an impressive voice cast including Orson Welles, Leonard Nimoy, Peter Cullen and Robert Stack, with its story taking the Autobots into one of their most dangerous battles yet. 

At the centre of the story is Unicron, a gigantic planet-consuming Transformer whose arrival threatens the very survival of the Autobots. As the Decepticons launch an all-out assault, the Autobots are forced into a desperate fight for the future of their world and the legendary Autobot Matrix of Leadership. 

What makes the film particularly memorable is the scale of its story. Rather than simply recreating the television series on a larger canvas, The Transformers: The Movie takes its characters into considerably darker and more dramatic territory. It remains an action-packed animated adventure, but there is a surprising sense of danger hanging over the film.

That darker tone helped the movie develop a reputation that has lasted well beyond its original theatrical run.

The Australian theatrical release is currently listed with a 17 September 2026 opening date, while individual cinemas may have different session schedules. MuviTimes lists screenings across cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Newcastle, Gold Coast and other locations. 

In Sydney alone, screenings are listed at a number of Event Cinemas and Hoyts locations, with some venues offering multiple sessions throughout the day. The film is listed at 98 minutes with an M classification on MuviTimes. 

For Australian audiences who grew up watching Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and the rest of the Autobots on television, this anniversary release offers a rare opportunity to see the original animated feature where it was meant to be seen: on a cinema screen.

And for younger Transformers fans, it provides a chance to discover just how different the franchise looked before giant CGI robots became Hollywood's preferred approach.

The Transformers: The Movie may be four decades old, but its combination of bold animation, memorable characters, rock-heavy music and unexpectedly serious storytelling has allowed it to survive far beyond its original era.
